Lifted but still hungry

Wuala - Stored and encrypted P2P solution

This is an original peer to peer project. Based on the p2p principles, where you get the storage you share, wuala proposes an encryption and storage solution to safe and share your info. The data is encrypted and stored into pieces on many replicated places (to prevent from struggling when people go offline), with a safe backup for emergency in case something goes wrong. Private, shared or public, your data is stored online. This raises of course all the legal questions suc as copyright for films and music but also for illegal content (criminal, terrorism...). This project as not managed to seduce me, especially when visiting the site, full of porn stuff. Spamming and legal issues might be the ones they will have to fight with, but nonetheless, the idea sounded good.

Pixelus - real time animation

Pixelux entertainment is an amazing story. This is the story of a small team in switzerland who managed to create a 3D engine, able to generate almost "as in real life" animations. The small team has proven such a breakthrough expertise, that 6 out of the team of 10 people, work in California by LucasFilm to share, improve their engine. Stimulating a window breaking, piece of wood or building according to strength, conditions and gesture was reduces to a couple of minutes instead of a couple of days. In this contexte, you can easily imagine how attractive they become to the entertainment and film industry. No doubt that this small company will become a strong player.

Mixin : ease your social life

Internet services are often about providing you with online services.
Mixin is bringing some innovation there in the sense this is an online service to do real life things.

To make it simple, the concept is the following. Organise your real life activities online, allowing people to use their favorite tools and interact with you as they like. The example will be clearer.

Imagine you are heading toward a very rainy weekend and do not feel like staying at home. By indicating in your online agenda your wishes and free time, you allow them to make suggestions, propositions to get your activities planned. Feeling like a movie, add a trailer, share timetables, exchange views...you can do what you like. What is really cool too, is that you can also add info by the means you like : SMS, mail, IM, twitter... Whatever you say or sahre via any of these tool, automatically creates your agenda, giving your friends indications.

The early alpha of the product is about to open. I suggest you have a look at their site and ask for an alpha account.

If you would like to see it, here is the mixin presentation.

Clipperz : protect your internet activity

The idea there is to offer an encryption engine that allows to handle not only access (like OpenID) but also internet activity. This probably not new and I guess that quite a few solutions of that type exist.
Making sure that what you are doing is protected, might not be of everyone's concern but surely will interest professionnals or heavy internet users, not necessarily willing to get their activity spied.

This is not my favorite project but most probably because I do not feel concerned by the service, but still worth having a glance at it.

If you would like to see what it is about, go to the presentation of clipperz.

Holistis : concentrating on your visitors

For those of you who had not the opportunity to come yesterday, here is a small description on what the ventures presented were about.

Holistis all started with a simple idea. Instead of always trying to attract more and more visitors, what if we could work on our existing visitors, in order to make them purchase more or act me.
e-commerce sites and media sites nameley, tend to concentrate on advertising, trying to grow increasingly the traffic.
The big problem with such a startegy is that it does not change anything to the sales (at least not in a dramatic way) as you do not influence more their behavior.

Holistis project is about personnalisation.
I am different to you and wish to be considered as an individual. When I visit a site for the first time, or if I come back after a few visits, always finding the same site, does not attract me to do more. If the site could, however, detect my characteristics and adapt its proposal to MY wishes, I probably would feel very much more concerned with the site and be tempted to go further and probably purchase.

98% of people leave a site without buying.
Through a small javascript enabled on your site, holistis provides your visitors with personnalized and optimized content.

The impact on sales is evident and they already signed contracts with Nespresso & TF1, two majors in terms of retail & media (The solution seems to be only addressing large sites who can afford such solutions).

The best is to come for them and we of course wish a long live to their project. See the presentation of holistis

Viewdle : searching through videos just like through text

For those of you who had not the opportunity to come yesterday, here is a small description on what the ventures presented were about.

Imagine you viewed dozens of videos and would like to retrieve a specific moment of a specific video when one of the speaker said a special word or sentence.
Haven't you dreamt of this ?
Well this is what viewdle is about.

Based on face recognition and language indexing, they have managed to create a video indexer allowing to automatically index videos.
Considering the increasing number of rich content being produced, this project clearly opens tremendous perspectives.
The biggest challenges of this innovation is not face recognition but language issues. Only available in english right now, they work on creating a french version as well as german and other languages.
I would not be surprised to hear they get additionnal fundings to increase the pace of video processing.

I hope they will get a great support because that, to me, is one of the smartest service I have seen so far.

IO - Making interface visual

This project is both strange and futurist.
I had the feeling that not all the attendees perceived th potential really well. Together with pixelux, this project is indeed a bit far from the web ventures we saw. This is even harder to understand as applications of this are not visible online, but live. Imagine you have the technology to transform any surface in an interface. We had see such presentation during the technoark, where Frédéric Kaplan decoded all the possibilities opened by such new technological improvements.
If a surface can become an interface, and despite early phase high prices, this means we can add interactivity to almost anything like a floor, a door, a wall. Bus stops, bank sides, supermarkets welcome points and wall, museums...all can become interactive, driving you through explanations or informations.
As an early comer, IO, despite the technology desadvantage of being a pionnier (i.e expensive) can carry a breakthrough in terms of marketing if they manage to get sufficient quick marketshares. The challenge for them will be to aize properly and spread quickely but the potential I see there is probably the biggest of all the projects, as it touches not only our limited geeky worlds of online people, but everyone in the street.
